in keeping with the labels 303 based theme, things kick off with blue flame, which sees dj overdose delve into serious 4x4 territory with angelic like synth stabs, jackin’ beats and gnarly acid lines. bare bonus bounce is a stripped back version of blue flame that retains the vocal samples, funk and jacking 4x4 beats. the flip side kicks off with acid lovely, a hefty 303 laden electro work out that certainly lives up to its name. the ep finishes off with work is work which retains the vocal samples of blue flame laid out over a raw and gritty electro beat.

cottam s ruff draft label makes a logical move and turns to a long-serving champion of gritty, soul-powered house jams from the tough side. dj nature may have made his name many moons ago, but he proves to be as relevant as ever on this killer two-track release. -alfred- is a tightly wound box jam that manages to maintain tension throughout without needing to pander to the release part of the process, sounding all the more exciting for it. -blood on your hands- meanwhile finds nature heading into the scuffed, soul-sampling territory he s most at home in, and the ensuing rumble of off-key funk is impossible to refute.

rothmans turn to debutant producer dawn again, who strides onto the football-focused label with a confident grip of otherworldly hardware jams. as is customary on the label, the mood takes on a laid back approach to four to the floor grooves, with -coloured pens- kicking off proceedings on a soaring bed of psyched-out house optimism. while -the italian- may be moodier in its demeanour, it s still just as mellow in its delivery, capitalising on alluring wave synths and reverb swells to great effect. -plain of jars- takes a trippier direction with its bubbling fx and bongo-powered beatdown, and then -lavender- switches things up with a rolling breakbeat undercarriage and plush lead lines on top.

rfbcolours 004 is aimed at the dark, jazzy smokey affairs. from the off u can see the imspiration fro the ep title with the a1 track from sombro and embezzlement society capturing a low end, horn sampled groover with rough claps and an undeniable groove. georgi barrel delivers again with something that will warm up the coldest clubs or capyure you on sunset terraces. long island sound hit the pianos hard on the slower paced but equally as grabbing and tense -grit-. label owner jamie trench rounds off with night lanterns which is a track thats been waiting for a space on wax for a good few years now and fits beautifully with the rest of the ep.

the last and eighth release in this series opens up with christian wunschs remix of ex machina on the a-side which is all hypnotic bounce, roaring chords, cutting through the irrepressible groove. morbecks remix of ghost town on a2 is an atmospheric but tough interpretation of the original, kicking hard with jackhammered drums, coupled with metal scraping metal sounds and a simplicity that makes it a handy tool to build great tension on the dance-floor. the b-side kicks off with jonas koppss remix of miscellaneous pt. 1 – creatively pairing the heavy rolling 909 drums with a classic four-on-the-floor clap pattern and topped with the eroded drones of the original track. b2 is a re-mastered version of the utterly timeless and epic club hit “1969” by the mastermind christian morgenstern himself.

greek producer markos spanoudakis aka kreon has certainly made an impact on the electronic music scene.his percussive and jazz tipped sound has found its place through solo releases for labels such as cecille, robsoul and many more seminal underground imprints. his latest offering on serialism has been widely received by a small handfull of the scenes elite who have been dropping tracks from the ep all summer hualtor kicks of proceedings with delayed vocal stabs that roll over a 4x4 kick and a doubled up snare. the bass groove cleverly pitches up and down and is completed with a series of shuffled hi hats which complete this minimalistic winner. up next on a2 is forpsyche, which encomopasses a tough and rolling drum selection with swing added for good measure, a sub bass, warm pads and erratic lead stabs bring the all the elements together nicely. third track ‘valtera’ then keeps to kreons signature laid back grooves, shuffling drum licks and the use of processed vocal stabs, the track seamlessly rolls with a series of lo-fi glitches and pitch shifted chord stabs. finally forpyke rounds off the package as it rolls out a sure fire drum selection full of swing and stripped-back percussive hits, repetitive chord textures ebb and flow throughout the composition which results in a truly hypnotic and raw dance floor killer, with intricate percussion patterns that are packed full of swing.

after the release of their collaborative breed ep at the end of last summer, nicole moudaber and skin (from skunk anansie) have unveiled their highly anticipated remix package featuring a long list of respected producers. carl craig, fur coat, jamie jones, jerome sydenham, paco osuna, pan-pot and scuba, are just some of the names which have turned their hand to the project. originally born out of nicole and skin s desire to fuse their rock and techno backgrounds, this is a true collaboration project with a difference. the pair have also recently been sharing the stage at high-profile slots such as space ibiza and coachella. the first track on the second part see s don t talk to me i m dancin remixed by hot creation boss jamie jones, which features a thudding heavy bassline, and zebra katz vocals sampled over the top. the second track on the a side see s french emotive techno specialist paul ritch turns in an atmospheric, driving remix of these walls are made of water . first up on the b side is pan-pot s take on these walls are made of water , adding the duo s characteristic stomping touch, as well as dramatic new synth melodies. this remix is another nicole favourite, often featured in her sets and her in the mood radio shows. rounding off the b side jerome sydenham remixes don t talk to me i m dancin feat. zfk and takes the track into uptempo driving territory.

having been rivals on the football pitch as teenagers, a chance encounter many years later - djing at an international windsurfing festival - cumulated in a back to back set that kicked off the italia90 collaboration. putting the footballing differences aside, italia90 grew out of a shared love of quality house music that was influenced greatly by glasgow s close relationship with chicago and institutions such as the sub club that brought these house heroes close to home.

having made his label introduction with his remix of label newcomer villete’s “rillia-, darand land gets to spread out and show off his unique brand of euphoric and uplifting deep house on his debut ep for the label, ‘discover you’. the title track is classic darand land, with bright piano chords, buzzing organs and a thick chicago house bass line. siren-like pads fade in and out from the periphery, as electrifying percussion elements come into play. frank & tony take a turn and apply their signature style onto the former track, adding a chunkier kick with bright as day claps and hi-hats to propel the track through the opalescent haze draped over the melodic elements. on the flip, “marcela’s sense” is a blissed out, head down late night affair. cosmic pads swirl around glistening keys and repressed organ chords, as toms bounce among the steady hi-hat ride, lulling the listener into a state of euphoria. the ep closes out with the atmospheric, peak time detroit house cut, “souls awash-. a serpentine bass line runs the show amidst swelling pads and in-your-face kicks and percussion. as with all of his productions, the track shines in the smaller details that float in and out of focus throughout, lending the track’s weightier elements an even greater sense of gravitas.

fresh on the back of the release of his third album good luck and do your best this summer, gold panda signs off an acclaimed 2016 with a very limited 12 of three remixes of music taken from his latest record. having previously re-worked the panda track community, berlin-resident fort romeau once again takes the reigns with a gorgeous, nine-minute pulsing, electro-heavy recreation of the track time eater complete with ghostly synth motifs that twirl around japanese instrumentation culminating in a frenetic release. us producer john roberts, who himself released one of the best deep house records of the year, remixes chiba nights, transforming it into a thumping, acid-tinged affair that mixes space and warped electronics beautifully.

kicking off the bump sampler is head honcho luke solomon, with his remix of anytime insanity by lil mark. it features vocals by us based vocalist allegra bandy. next up is the brett johnson remix of hot by copenhagen based producer kim kemi. on the b side lil mark s original production runaway, gets the remix treatment by the infamous matt tolfrey for his ec1 mix series. rounding off the sampler is bandwagoneer, a brand new production by lil mark.

a1 “young in the tropic” sets the mood deep in the jungle. a thick layer of tribal drums forms the base of this track, with birds of paradise echoing above - mysterious chirps emanate from the deep. at the midway point euphoric stabs emerge to round it off in a heady, reverberant breakdown, sure to get you going on the dance floor.

after the success of their first release, emotive returns with a 3 track follow up from label forefathers silk 86. emotive 002 continues the theme of its predecessor, with an evocative blend of house, disco and some much needed soul laying the foundations for all 3 tracks.
the aptly named “vince charming” kicks off the package, drawing you in with a smooth bass hook before the vocal gets to work on embedding itself deep into your mind. on the flip side “whenever you need me” is a driving house workout, featuring cascading strings and horns straight out of disco s heyday. rounding off the package is the not so subtle “vince charming g mix” a thumping club ready rework of the a side.

video for the title track “mango bay” was played for hours over stream by one of the top dota players rtz, achieving legendary meme status over night. “rush” and “rocky bay” are wrapping up the a side carrying faster tech grooves, while still maintaining the organic component (warmth) with bass, chopped vocals and woodwind leads.
b side starts off with “calypso”, one of the earliest x-coast productions - a steady house groove made from layers of keys, trumpet stabs, rich with hats and ghost snares - perfect to get the party started. being the last track, “don’t stop” is a hidden gem of this ep - what seems to be a hawaiian steel guitar classic, quickly transforms into a floor stomper, it’s a house beat reinforced by a classic rolling break, hammond stabs and samples of sterling void & paris brightledge’s “it’s all right”.

“rainy days” is a subtle afterhours track, with an undulating groove and drums that feel like they ve been carved out of marblee. distant groans, hints of studio ambience and druggy, moaned half-words “edifeirwch” comes a long with the premise to sail off to vast open seas but also keeping you to the ground with it’s 4x4. fliping the side we have franco cinelli’s “rainy days” extended remix focusing on intrincated percutions wich making the groove give you this “forward and backwards” feeling.

new imprint daphian productions makes its debut with a local talent, jacopo latini aka jackie, plus an amazing remix by mr. dj honesty. dpv001 was realized trying to merge the most refined house sound along with an emotional dub. front side -what you gave me- and -morning haze- on the flip side mark the beginning and the end of an careful research on authenticity and acoustics quality.

american experimental musican shane english continues in a long tradition of outsider electronics as hes been humbly prolific in his output though the years involving himself in numerous recording projects.collaborating with jonah lange in their group corporate park as well as an ongoing collab with beau wanzer (seeing a release last year under the cp/bw name), english now commits his second full length solo offering to vinyl in the form of the general dimensions lp. sparse machine driven electronics dominate the recording providing a back drop for the occasional pulsating rhythm, metallic clank or floating obscured vocal. while it is a dark and sparse affair there is a quiet downtrodden beauty throughout giving the recording a sense of uncertain serenity in an almost shoegazey way. highly recommended for those into early electronics.

kuedo returns to planet mu with his long awaited second album ’slow knife’. it’s been five years since his acclaimed debut ‘severant’ and time has proved it prescient, its futuristic trap influence is now ubiquitous. ‘slow knife‘ seems to return to where ‘severant’ left off, but with the intricate sound design of last year’s haunting ep ‘assertion of a surrounding presence’ subsumed into the compositions, making them more exacting and beautifully crafted.
